New players to Tournament chess normally play in at most 3 unrated tournaments. If they do really well in their 1^st or 2^nd tournament, they should enter a rated tournament for their next one. Rated tournaments require players to be USCF members, however, some tournaments will rate K-3 players without membership. Youth memberships begin at $17/year, and include a national chess rating.
